Conversion Tracking: Why Your Ads Are Only as Good as Your Data

Here's an uncomfortable truth about modern advertising: the platforms make most of their decisions for you. Google Ads and Meta use automated bidding to decide who sees your ads and how much to pay for each click. Those systems learn from one thing above all else, the conversions you tell them about. If that data is missing, duplicated or wrong, the automation optimises towards the wrong outcome, and your budget follows.

What counts as a conversion?

A conversion is any action that has real value to your business. For most of our clients, that means:

  • Phone calls from ads and from your website.
  • Contact and quote form submissions.
  • Online purchases, with their actual order value.
  • Bookings, appointment requests or live chat enquiries.

Page views, time on site and button clicks that don't lead anywhere are not conversions. Counting them as such teaches the algorithm to chase cheap, meaningless actions.

The most common tracking mistakes

  • Counting the same lead twice, for example once when the form is submitted and again when the thank-you page loads.
  • Tracking clicks on the phone number instead of actual calls of a meaningful length.
  • Old conversion actions left running after a website redesign, quietly recording nothing or recording the wrong thing.
  • Missing consent setup, so data is lost when visitors decline cookies.
  • No offline data: the platform never learns which leads became paying customers.

Get consent mode right

With privacy regulations requiring consent before tracking, a properly configured cookie banner and Google's consent mode are now essential. Set up correctly, consent mode lets Google model conversions from users who decline cookies, so you don't lose sight of a large share of your results.

Go beyond the form fill

Not every lead is equal. If you can feed back which enquiries turned into paying customers, by importing offline conversions or connecting your CRM, the ad platforms can learn to find more people like your best customers, not just people who fill in forms.

Audit regularly

Tracking breaks more often than people think. A website update, a new form plugin or a changed thank-you page can stop conversions recording overnight. We recommend a quick monthly check: compare the leads in your inbox and CRM with what the ad platforms report. If the numbers don't roughly match, something needs fixing.

Clean data, better results

Fixing tracking rarely feels exciting, but it's often the single biggest improvement we make to a new client's account. When the platforms learn from accurate data, cost per lead usually falls and lead quality improves. Duncross Media sets up and audits conversion tracking across Google Ads, Meta and Google Analytics. If you're not sure your numbers can be trusted, we'll find out.
